(Encouragement for Christian Women Walking Through Fear, Anxiety, and Spiritual Attack)

There are seasons in life when the world suddenly goes dark — not outside, but inside. Seasons when fear grips your heart so tightly you can barely breathe. Seasons when you feel lost, overwhelmed, and unsure if you’ll ever find your way back to peace again.

I call these Dark Forest seasons — the moments when life feels haunted, heavy, and hopeless. And if you’ve ever walked through one, I want you to know this:

God meets you there.

Right there — in the dark.

Right there — in the fear.

Right there — in the place you thought would break you.

I know this because I lived it.

⭐ When Fear Becomes a Forest, God Meets You in Dark Seasons

About a decade ago, I went through the darkest and most terrifying season of my life. Fear didn’t just visit me — it sat on me, like a smothering blanket I couldn’t shake off.

As I wrote in my award-winning Christian book, Emergence,

“This was not a healthy sense of fear. It was a spirit of fear that had come upon me and wouldn’t get off, like a blanket that was smothering me.”

I went from jogging around my neighborhood to being afraid to be left alone. I couldn’t paint. I couldn’t finish a movie. I couldn’t sleep. Every day felt like a battle for my sanity, my peace, and my life.

Fear crippled me.

And like Snow White running into the dark forest, my imagination turned against me.

Everything felt threatening.

Everything felt overwhelming.

Everything felt hopeless.

But even in that darkness, God was not absent.

He was whispering.

He was guiding.

He was waiting for me to look up.

⭐ When You Can’t Sense God, Surround Yourself with People Who Can

One day, in the middle of a panic spiral, I called my sister — my “Guardian.”

She said something simple, but powerful:

“Get into the Word, Mistie. Read it out loud and over you.”

In that dark and dreadful forest...

When I couldn’t see the truth, she became my eyes, reminding me to focus on Him.

When I couldn’t hear God, godly friends, pastors, and prayer warriors listened and helped point me to Him.

When I couldn’t stand, my incredible husband stood for me — praying, encouraging, fighting for me spiritually.

This is one of the greatest lessons from my Dark Forest season:

When you can’t see in the dark, surround yourself with people who are filled with the Light.

People who speak life.

People who speak Scripture.

People who speak truth when your feelings lie.

God often meets us through the voices of those who love Him.

Please don't misunderstand me. People can't save you—only Jesus can.

But God can use people to help point you to the Prince of Peace when you're lost in the chaos of darkness.

⭐ The Turning Point: The Word + Prayer

Fear is loud. But God’s Word is louder.

I learned that the only way to silence the enemy’s noise was to replace it with Scripture.

Psalm 46:10

James 4:7

Revelation 12:11

Philippians 4:6-7

These verses became my weapons.

Prayer became my oxygen.

His presence became my peace.

The Word became my light.

And slowly, the forest began to thin. Light began to break through. Hope began to rise again.

⭐ Going Deeper Still

Later, on a beach in Hawaii, God gave me a picture of what He had been doing all along.

I didn’t come to the ocean just to watch it. I came to experience it.

So I stood up, walked past the comfortable sand, and stepped into the deep — even as the sun went down and the waves crashed against me.

It wasn’t graceful. It wasn’t pretty. I got knocked down. I got covered in sand. I got humbled.

But I went deeper.

And God showed me:

“Spiritually, you were sitting on the shore, waiting for Me to move. But I was calling you deeper — into intimacy, into trust, into encounter.”

Sometimes the dark forest is the very place God uses to call us deeper.

Not to destroy us — but to reveal us.

Not to drown us — but to deliver us.

Not to break us — but to build us.

⭐ What I Want You to Know

If you are walking through a Dark Forest season right now, hear me:

⭐ You are not alone.

⭐ You are not forgotten.

⭐ You are not failing.

⭐ You are not beyond rescue.

God meets you in dark seasons.

Jesus meets you in the storm.

Jesus speaks peace over your panic.

Jesus walks into the forest with you.

Jesus calls you deeper — not to harm you, but to heal you.

Your fear does not disqualify you. Your weakness does not disappoint Him. Your tears do not scare Him.

He is the God who calms storms, rebukes winds, and rescues daughters.
